Tennis Courts Update

/Tennis Courts Update

04-Tennis BallIn a unanimous vote, the TLIA Board has approved moving forward on construction of new tennis courts. An overwhelming outpouring of support from TLIA members pushed us over the top of our fund raising goals. Over 100 families donated just over $54,000 and exceeded the threshold required for TLIA to appropriate $60,000 from the association’s capital account for construction of the new courts.

Construction started March 15 with the trimming of surrounding trees and the removal of the perimeter fence by Bulldog Construction. Over the next few days, the courts were demolished and the material recycled and mixed with a cement-based foundation. This new process, called cement stabilization, uses this mixture to create a new foundation specifically designed to help eliminate movement and settling, which was the cause of the cracking and sloping of the old courts. The foundation will be supported by an angled cement stabilized support structure to increase the stability of the courts even more. After it’s set in place, the structure will cure for a few days. A retaining wall will be added on the street side and new drain tiles will be installed directly in front of the courts to help alleviate surface flooding and pooling during rainy days. Four inches of gravel will be placed on top of the foundation and then three inches of asphalt on top of the gravel to create the tennis surface. After “curing” for two weeks, the asphalt will then be striped and painted for use.

Neighbors adjacent to the courts have been notified of the construction and the Tower Lakes police have notified and will increase patrols to assure safety.

A huge THANK YOU to the entire community for supporting the new tennis court plan, including the members of the TLIA Tennis Court Committee, who assisted in fund-raising and project planning. An additional THANK YOU goes to resident Victor Mannina, for donating his time and resources serving as the construction coordinator for the project.

Once complete, the courts will be a great investment in our community. The estimated opening date for the courts is mid-May.
